Abstract

Sociolinguistic workshops for migrants: observations and descriptions of language interactions

Through the observation of sociolinguistic workshops set up at the Social and Cultural Centre (CSC) La Colline in Cenon (Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine) and the cultural and linguistic heterogeneity of its participants, we propose in this paper, in addition to a brief presentation of the workshop’s method, an account of observations and a first attempt at analysing the linguistic practices of women in a relatively recent migrant situation in their learning of the French language. The articulation between French and the language of origin will certainly be described, but the analysis will focus in particular on the interactions between participants, mainly from the Maghreb and Turkey, as the main vector of socialization – and therefore of learning French – in the very particular context of the workshops. Although these exchanges seem to be part of a quite classical group dynamic, they remain relatively complex to set up.
